Rusutsu with a baby in Winter

Image
Thinking of travelling to Rusutsu resort in Hokkaido for some famous pow pow? We had a fabulous time!  Here are some tips and info for travelling with your baby. Our bub turned 7 month old on this trip (Jan 2024). I found it was difficult finding baby friendly info before getting here so hope this might help a few of you!  Getting here  We took a bus from Chitose airport, there are several companies and we went with Big Run which was organised by the hotel. Once we arrived at the meeting spot on the first floor we were able to leave our bags and explore food and shops on the third floor.  There are HEAPS of shops and restaurants so watch out for your timing. We expected to find a good court but ended up being in a large complex.  Make sure you take the same elevator (we had our travel pram for bub) next to the meeting point as the building where the shops are is not connected on all floors.  The bus ride was 2 hours long (worth noting if you are...

Public transport timetable from Salento, Colombia to Cocora, Fincas Cafeteras and Finlandia

Image
Here are the bus times form Salento, Colombia. Jeeps leave from the main square next to the ticket booth, first buy a ticket then you will need to get into the second line to get on a Jeep. If there are more than 2 people travelling together, it's worth getting in a line each so you are not wasting more time in the second line once you have your ticket. The bigger buses leave from the bus station just outside the main town, maps.me has the location. Apologies for the bad photos. Photos taken at the beginning of August 2018.

What to pack and how to survive the Ciudad Perdida - "lost city" hike in Colombia

Image
We went on the Ciudad Perdida, lost city hike in mid July. I was a bit concerned about how I might've coped (I HATE the heat!) We were really pleased we did it as it was stunning! We wished our guide gave us more information though on indigenous culture (other tour groups had lectures throughout the trip), nonetheless, we still learned a lot, met some lovely people from the community and I was able to test my level of mental endurance and resilience! Here's are some tips, photos from the hike, a list of things to pack (what I wished I packed) and how we all survived! Step 1: choosing a tour operator  As the guidebooks say, there are 4 operators who have permission from the community to take hikers through, Wiwa, Turcol, Magic Tours and Expotur. All other hostels and tour agencies work with one of these operators. From my observations, there are a few differences: Wiwa has an indigenous guide and will take an English translator if there are enough English speakers on...

Coffee tour times and prices for Ocaso coffee farm near Salento, Colombia

Image
We had the most fantastic day walking down to the coffee farm from Salento! The scenery was stunning and the walk took less than an hour (all down hill). Take water and there are little shops along the way. There is another coffee farm next door, Don Elias. We looked at both and went with Ocasa and were really happy with it. The highlight was we were able to pick coffee berries! There was a lovely little coffee shop on site at Ocasa as well. We took a Jeep back to Salento from the entrance at Ocaso, it was 3000 pesos per person.

Immigration fees and taxes departing by ferry from Chetumal (Mexico) to Caye Caulker (Belize)

Image
Fees/taxes leaving Mexico for Belize by Ferry These are the notice posted at the ferry terminal in May 2018 from Chetumal to Caye Caulker. Most of the backpackers we were with argued against paying the fees, some had printed proof they had paid the taxes on their way into Mexico by flight. We all paid it in the end so make sure you have enough cash to do so. There was an ATM close to the main road but it might be a bit problematic if your card doesn't work. An alternative to making payment to the immigration officer is to go to the bank and return with a receipt (no one took this option). Once we paid, our passports were stamped and we did not get a receipt. There are fees payable entering Belize as well. You get a receipt for paying this.

Bus Timetable and prices San Gil, Barichara and Guane, Colombia

Image
Here is the timetable and info on prices. Photo taken at the Barichara office for Cootrasagil on 24 July 2018. Wish we had known there were later busses coming from San Gil in the first place so we could have spent more time at the canyon on the way! Lonely Planet, you have let us down again in Colombia :( San Gil to Barichara = 45 minutes Barichara to Guane = 15 minutes
